FAQ For Sex Therapy And Counseling

As an expert sex therapist and counselor in the Orange County area, Todd Creager brings you answers to commonly asked questions about sex therapy in general, and how he approaches sex therapy at his own practice.

Sex therapy is a good fit for individuals or couples who are experiencing changes or challenges in intimacy, sexual desire, performance, communication around sex, or those wanting to deepen connection and passion. Whether you’re seeking help on your own or with a partner, this work can support you in navigating what’s getting in the way and opening new possibilities.

Some common concerns include low or mismatched desire, difficulty with sexual arousal or response, performance anxiety, loss of passion in long-term relationships, communication and intimacy breakdowns, post-infidelity sexual issues, and wanting to reconnect sexually after life changes (children, aging, health). Todd has particular expertise in these areas and works with both individuals and couples.

Todd’s practice accommodates both individuals and couples. If you’re seeking therapy on your own, you can explore your own sexual identity, history, blocks or patterns. If you’re meeting with Todd as a couple, therapy can help the two of you communicate about sex, rediscover intimacy, manage mismatches in desire, or deal with relational/sexual impact of infidelity or trauma.

Todd’s primary office is in Huntington Beach, CA, and he serves the broader Orange County area — including places like Newport Coast, Irvine, Corona del Mar, Seal Beach, Long Beach, and beyond. Todd does a majority of his counseling sessions through virtual therapy which allows him to meet with individuals and couples outside of the immediate area.

In the first session, we’ll explore what brings you here (your concerns, hopes, and goals around sex and intimacy). We’ll talk about your sexual/relational history, current patterns, and what you feel is working or not. We’ll also discuss how we might work together — frequency of sessions, whether individual or couple work, therapeutic approach, and how to measure progress. My aim is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel heard and empowered.

There’s no fixed number of sessions — it depends on your goals, how complex the issues are, and how much change you’d like to see. Some people feel meaningful improvement in a handful of sessions; others engage in longer-term work to deepen intimacy or integrate new patterns. At our outset we’ll set a plan together and reassess regularly.

While general relationship or couples therapy focuses on communication, conflict resolution, emotional connection and so on, sex therapy specifically targets issues around sexual function, desire, arousal, intimacy, sexual identity and satisfaction. It often involves talking about sexual beliefs, history, fantasies, desires, physiological/psychological factors, and how those link with relational dynamics — all within a safe therapeutic space.

Absolutely. When it comes to intimacy, you don’t have to wait for a crisis. Many couples or individuals seek therapy because they feel the spark has faded, or they’d like to upgrade from “okay” to “thriving” in their sexual lives. Seeking support to increase connection, deepen pleasure, and explore intimacy is valid and important.

In this practice your privacy and comfort are paramount. Sexual topics can feel vulnerable — we work to build trust, respect your pace, and ensure that everything you bring to our sessions is handled with care and discretion. If you’re coming as a couple, we’ll clarify how we navigate confidentiality for each person from the beginning.

You can call (714) 848-2288 or email [email protected] to schedule a consultation. We’ll have a brief conversation to determine fit, discuss your needs, and arrange the first full session (in-person in Huntington Beach or online depending on what we agree). From there we’ll map out next steps tailored to you.
