FAQ for Divorce Therapy & Counseling

FAQ for Divorce Therapy & Counseling

Marriage and relationship therapist Todd Creager shares helpful details about the divorce counseling services he provides to couples preparing to or currently navigating divorce. Contact Todd’s Huntington Beach office to learn more about scheduling a virtual session.

Q: Who is divorce counseling for, and when should I consider it?

A: Divorce counseling (or divorce-therapy) is helpful for people who are planning a divorce, in the process of separation, or dealing with post-divorce emotional or relational challenges.

Even before legal steps begin, therapy can help you clarify your goals, manage emotions, and reduce conflict.

Q: What kinds of issues do you commonly work with in divorce therapy?

A: Some of the issues addressed include emotional healing (grief, guilt, shame), communication with an ex or soon-to-be ex, co-parenting dynamics, identity/self-esteem shifts, conflict resolution, healing from infidelity, managing stress and anxiety, and moving forward into a post-divorce life.

Q: Do you work with both individuals and couples (or ex-couples)?

A: Yes. Depending on the situation, therapy may be one-on-one, or involve both partners (if both are willing).

In some cases, separated couples benefit from “therapeutic conversations” to manage conflict or co-parenting more productively.

Q: Do I need to be located in Orange County to work with you? Do you offer remote sessions?

A: Although my practice is based in Orange County (Huntington Beach and serving the surrounding areas), I currently offer online/virtual telehealth sessions  — which allows me to work with clients throughout Orange County and beyond.

Q: How many sessions does divorce therapy typically take?

A: Every case is different. Some clients may see noticeable benefits in just a few sessions; others may choose longer engagement over several months.

Often we begin with a short block (e.g. 4–8 sessions) and reassess progress and need from there.

Q: How is divorce counseling different from general individual therapy or marriage counseling?

A: Divorce counseling is tailored to the unique emotional, relational, and logistical challenges of ending a committed relationship.

While general therapy might address personal issues broadly, divorce therapy is more focused on issues like separation, co-parenting, communication with an ex, legal/emotional transitions, and post-split identity.

Q: What can I expect during our first session?

A: In the first session, we’ll discuss your current situation, goals, and challenges.

You’ll share what you hope to get out of therapy, and I’ll explain the process, approach, and how we might proceed.

We may also begin to map out key issues to work on.

Q: Can you help with co-parenting issues and working with an ex?

A: Absolutely. Many clients are dealing not only with their internal emotional work, but with ongoing dynamics with a former partner, especially around parenting.

Therapy can support you in establishing healthy boundaries, better communication, and minimizing conflict for the benefit of children (if applicable).

Q: How do I get started or schedule a consultation?

A: You can contact me at (714) 848-2288 to schedule a free 15-minute consultation and discuss whether we’d be a good fit.

From there we can arrange your first full session either in person or via my virtual telehealth services.
